# Fyle vs Diversion

Diversion is cloud version control for large binary files, with branching, merging, reviews and locks, and it aims at fleets of agents. It is the closest product to Fyle on binary branching. Fyle takes a different shape: an on-demand drive that ordinary apps open directly, with branches created automatically when a save is based on an old version.

Last checked: October 2026. Fyle is in development. Built so far: accounts, organisations with roles, two-factor sign-in, organisation security policies, and device sign-in for the desktop app and CLI. The drive, agent sessions and review are planned and not available yet.

## At a glance

| | Diversion | Fyle |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Desktop drive for ordinary apps | Version control client, not an on-demand drive for ordinary apps. [2] | Mounts as an ordinary folder in Finder (macOS), File Explorer (Windows) and a FUSE mount (Linux). Files download when opened and are cached. (Planned: desktop launch) |
| Agent access | Claude Code plugin; no MCP server. [1] | Agents work in the mounted folder like any program. `fyle agent claude` (or any other command) runs one in its own session folder. A CLI and an MCP server cover remote agents, under the same permissions as people. (Planned: agent layer) |
| Conflicting edits | Branching, merging and locks for binaries. [2] | A save based on an older version becomes a branch. Nothing is overwritten, dropped or turned into a conflicted copy. (Planned: desktop launch) |
| Human review of agent changes | Reviews. [2] | A named reviewer keeps the current version, takes the branch or keeps both. Rules decide who reviews which folders. (Planned: review) |
| Windows | Not covered by our research | Windows is a launch platform, alongside macOS and Linux. (Planned: desktop launch) |
| Bring your own storage | Not covered by our research | Bring your own S3-compatible bucket: AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage, Cloudflare R2, MinIO or Ceph. (Planned: Enterprise) |
| UK data residency | Not covered by our research | UK-only workspaces: your UK bucket plus a UK-hosted coordinator and database. (Planned: Enterprise) |
| Version history | Version control history. [2] | Every version records the person, device and agent session behind it, and any version can be restored. Retention per plan is not final. (Planned: desktop launch) |
| Published price | $25–35/user/month. [1] | Personal, Team and Enterprise plans, priced per person with storage included; no free tier or trial. [See pricing](https://fyle.sh/pricing) (Draft, not on sale) |

## Where Diversion is stronger

- Branching, merging and reviews for large binaries, shipping today. [2]
- Locks for files that should only have one editor at a time. [2]
- Built with fleets of agents in mind, including a Claude Code plugin. [1]

## Where Fyle differs

- Fyle plans a drive, not a version control client: no commits or check-outs for people to learn, and apps open files from the folder as usual.
- Fyle plans to create branches automatically when a save is based on an old version, then route them to a named reviewer.
- Fyle plans an MCP server alongside agents working in the mounted folder.

## Which to choose

### Choose Diversion if

- Your team already works with commits, branches and merges, for example in a game studio.
- You need binary branching and merging in production today.
- Locking is part of your workflow for large assets.

### Choose Fyle if

- Your people don’t use version control and shouldn’t have to.
- You want files to stream on demand in ordinary apps, with agents in the same folders.
- You want branches only when there is a real conflict, reviewed by the owner of that folder.

## Questions

### Is Fyle a version control system like Diversion?

Not in the same way. Fyle plans to be a drive that people use without commits: every save is a version, and only a save based on an older version becomes a branch for review. Diversion is version control with explicit branching, merging and reviews.

### Can Fyle merge binary files?

Fyle plans automatic merging only for formats it understands, such as text, code and Markdown. Other files branch, and a reviewer keeps the current version, takes the branch or keeps both. Our research found Diversion claims smart merging but publishes little detail.

### Is Fyle available now?

Fyle is in development. Built so far: accounts, organisations with roles, two-factor sign-in, organisation security policies, and device sign-in for the desktop app and CLI. The drive, agent sessions and review are planned and not available yet.

### Where do these facts come from?

Competitor facts come from our October 2026 review of 50 products, and each one links to the page it was taken from. Prices are as published, in the vendor’s currency. We recheck these pages and correct anything that has changed.
