# Fyle vs Dropbox

Dropbox is a mainstream sync-and-share drive with a read/write MCP server in open beta. When two edits clash it makes a conflicted copy. Fyle plans to turn a clashing save into a branch that a named person reviews, and to give agents full-size file access through the same permissions as the drive.

Last checked: October 2026. Fyle is in development. Built so far: accounts, organisations with roles, two-factor sign-in, organisation security policies, and device sign-in for the desktop app and CLI. The drive, agent sessions and review are planned and not available yet.

## At a glance

| | Dropbox | Fyle |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Desktop drive for ordinary apps | Yes. Sync-and-share drive. [2] | Mounts as an ordinary folder in Finder (macOS), File Explorer (Windows) and a FUSE mount (Linux). Files download when opened and are cached. (Planned: desktop launch) |
| Agent access | Read/write MCP server, open beta; agent file reads limited to 5 MB. [1] | Agents work in the mounted folder like any program. `fyle agent claude` (or any other command) runs one in its own session folder. A CLI and an MCP server cover remote agents, under the same permissions as people. (Planned: agent layer) |
| Conflicting edits | Makes a conflicted copy. [3] | A save based on an older version becomes a branch. Nothing is overwritten, dropped or turned into a conflicted copy. (Planned: desktop launch) |
| Human review of agent changes | No review of agent changes. [3] | A named reviewer keeps the current version, takes the branch or keeps both. Rules decide who reviews which folders. (Planned: review) |
| Windows | Not covered by our research | Windows is a launch platform, alongside macOS and Linux. (Planned: desktop launch) |
| Bring your own storage | Not covered by our research | Bring your own S3-compatible bucket: AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage, Cloudflare R2, MinIO or Ceph. (Planned: Enterprise) |
| UK data residency | EU hosting needs 15 or more seats. [2] | UK-only workspaces: your UK bucket plus a UK-hosted coordinator and database. (Planned: Enterprise) |
| Version history | Plus keeps 30 days. [2] | Every version records the person, device and agent session behind it, and any version can be restored. Retention per plan is not final. (Planned: desktop launch) |
| Published price | Plus $9.99/month (2 TB); $15–24/user for teams. [2] | Personal, Team and Enterprise plans, priced per person with storage included; no free tier or trial. [See pricing](https://fyle.sh/pricing) (Draft, not on sale) |

## Where Dropbox is stronger

- Much cheaper storage: 2 TB on Plus for $9.99/month. [2]
- A read/write MCP server already in open beta. [1]

## Where Fyle differs

- Fyle plans to make a clashing save into a branch with a named reviewer, instead of a conflicted copy someone has to find and reconcile.
- Fyle plans no small per-file limit for agents: they read and write full files under the same permissions as the drive.
- Fyle plans to keep version history long enough to audit agent edits on every paid plan.
- Fyle plans UK-only workspaces for Enterprise customers.

## Which to choose

### Choose Dropbox if

- You mainly need cheap, reliable sync and sharing.
- Agents only need to read small files.
- Conflicts are rare in your team and conflicted copies are manageable.

### Choose Fyle if

- Agents edit shared files and you want a person to approve what lands.
- Agents need to work with files larger than 5 MB.
- You need long history to audit or roll back agent edits.

## Questions

### Does Dropbox work with AI agents?

Yes. When we checked in October 2026, Dropbox had a read/write MCP server in open beta. Our research found agent file reads were limited to 5 MB.

### Is Fyle cheaper than Dropbox?

No. Dropbox Plus gives 2 TB for $9.99/month, which is less per terabyte than Fyle’s plans. Fyle is for people who need agents and people working safely on the same files, not for the cheapest storage.

### Is Fyle available now?

Fyle is in development. Built so far: accounts, organisations with roles, two-factor sign-in, organisation security policies, and device sign-in for the desktop app and CLI. The drive, agent sessions and review are planned and not available yet.

### Where do these facts come from?

Competitor facts come from our October 2026 review of 50 products, and each one links to the page it was taken from. Prices are as published, in the vendor’s currency. We recheck these pages and correct anything that has changed.
