# Fyle vs Google Drive

Google Drive comes with Google Workspace, and Google has an MCP server for Drive in developer preview. Data regions are US or EU, and version history keeps 30 days or 100 versions. Fyle plans review of agent changes, longer history for auditing agents and UK-only workspaces for Enterprise customers.

Last checked: October 2026. Fyle is in development. Built so far: accounts, organisations with roles, two-factor sign-in, organisation security policies, and device sign-in for the desktop app and CLI. The drive, agent sessions and review are planned and not available yet.

## At a glance

| | Google Drive | Fyle |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Desktop drive for ordinary apps | Yes. Drive bundled with Workspace. [1] | Mounts as an ordinary folder in Finder (macOS), File Explorer (Windows) and a FUSE mount (Linux). Files download when opened and are cached. (Planned: desktop launch) |
| Agent access | MCP server in developer preview. [1] | Agents work in the mounted folder like any program. `fyle agent claude` (or any other command) runs one in its own session folder. A CLI and an MCP server cover remote agents, under the same permissions as people. (Planned: agent layer) |
| Conflicting edits | Not covered by our research | A save based on an older version becomes a branch. Nothing is overwritten, dropped or turned into a conflicted copy. (Planned: desktop launch) |
| Human review of agent changes | No review of agent changes. [1] | A named reviewer keeps the current version, takes the branch or keeps both. Rules decide who reviews which folders. (Planned: review) |
| Windows | Not covered by our research | Windows is a launch platform, alongside macOS and Linux. (Planned: desktop launch) |
| Bring your own storage | Not covered by our research | Bring your own S3-compatible bucket: AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage, Cloudflare R2, MinIO or Ceph. (Planned: Enterprise) |
| UK data residency | No. Data regions are US or EU. [2] | UK-only workspaces: your UK bucket plus a UK-hosted coordinator and database. (Planned: Enterprise) |
| Version history | 30 days or 100 versions. [3] | Every version records the person, device and agent session behind it, and any version can be restored. Retention per plan is not final. (Planned: desktop launch) |
| Published price | From £11.50/user/month with Workspace. [1] | Personal, Team and Enterprise plans, priced per person with storage included; no free tier or trial. [See pricing](https://fyle.sh/pricing) (Draft, not on sale) |

## Where Google Drive is stronger

- Bundled with Workspace, so teams already on Google get it without a new tool. [1]
- An MCP server for Drive is available to developers in preview. [1]
- Data region choice between the US and the EU. [2]

## Where Fyle differs

- Fyle plans review of agent changes before they land on a person’s file.
- Fyle plans to keep history long enough to audit and roll back agent edits, recording which agent session made each version.
- Fyle plans UK-only workspaces for Enterprise customers, using their own UK bucket and a UK-hosted coordinator.
- Fyle plans a desktop drive where agents work on the same files as people, not a separate cloud API.

## Which to choose

### Choose Google Drive if

- Your organisation runs on Google Workspace and mostly works in Docs, Sheets and Slides.
- US or EU data regions meet your requirements.
- You are experimenting with agents and a developer preview is enough.

### Choose Fyle if

- Your files are large or desktop-app files, opened in tools outside the browser.
- You need a long, attributed history of agent edits.
- You need data kept in the UK.

## Questions

### Does Google Drive support MCP?

Google announced MCP tooling for Workspace developers in May 2026. When we checked in October 2026 it was a developer preview, not meant for production.

### Can Google Drive keep data in the UK?

Our research found Google Workspace data regions are the US or the EU. Fyle plans UK-only workspaces for Enterprise customers; they are not available yet.

### Is Fyle available now?

Fyle is in development. Built so far: accounts, organisations with roles, two-factor sign-in, organisation security policies, and device sign-in for the desktop app and CLI. The drive, agent sessions and review are planned and not available yet.

### Where do these facts come from?

Competitor facts come from our October 2026 review of 50 products, and each one links to the page it was taken from. Prices are as published, in the vendor’s currency. We recheck these pages and correct anything that has changed.
