Fyle vs CTERA

CTERA is an enterprise file platform with an MCP server that can create files, plus locking and snapshots. It is sold to IT rather than to teams. Fyle plans branching and a named-reviewer step for agent changes, built around a desktop drive.

Last checked: October 2026. Every CTERA fact links to its source.

Fyle is in development. Built so far: accounts, organisations with roles, two-factor sign-in, organisation security policies, and device sign-in for the desktop app and CLI. The drive, agent sessions and review are planned and not available yet.

Where CTERA is stronger

  • Announced itself as the first hybrid cloud storage vendor to support MCP; its server can create files.[1]
  • Locking and snapshots in an established enterprise platform.[2]

Where Fyle differs

  • Fyle plans branches instead of locks, with a named reviewer deciding what lands.
  • Fyle plans self-serve Personal and Team plans as well as Enterprise.
  • Fyle plans agent sessions that record which agent changed which file.

Which to choose

Choose CTERA if

  • Your IT team runs a hybrid cloud file estate and wants agent access on top of it.
  • Locking and snapshots already meet your needs.
  • You need an enterprise platform in production now.

Choose Fyle if

  • You want agent changes reviewed before they land, not just locked out.
  • You want a team to start without an IT-led rollout.
  • You need per-agent attribution of changes.

Questions

Can CTERA’s MCP server write files?

Yes. When we checked in October 2026, CTERA’s MCP server could create files.

How do Fyle and CTERA handle conflicting edits?

CTERA uses locking. Fyle plans optimistic writes: a save based on an older version becomes a branch, and a named reviewer keeps the current version, takes the branch or keeps both.

Is Fyle available now?

Fyle is in development. Built so far: accounts, organisations with roles, two-factor sign-in, organisation security policies, and device sign-in for the desktop app and CLI. The drive, agent sessions and review are planned and not available yet.
