Fyle vs Dropbox

Dropbox is a mainstream sync-and-share drive with a read/write MCP server in open beta. When two edits clash it makes a conflicted copy. Fyle plans to turn a clashing save into a branch that a named person reviews, and to give agents full-size file access through the same permissions as the drive.

Last checked: October 2026. Every Dropbox fact links to its source.

Fyle is in development. Built so far: accounts, organisations with roles, two-factor sign-in, organisation security policies, and device sign-in for the desktop app and CLI. The drive, agent sessions and review are planned and not available yet.

Where Dropbox is stronger

  • Much cheaper storage: 2 TB on Plus for $9.99/month.[2]
  • A read/write MCP server already in open beta.[1]

Where Fyle differs

  • Fyle plans to make a clashing save into a branch with a named reviewer, instead of a conflicted copy someone has to find and reconcile.
  • Fyle plans no small per-file limit for agents: they read and write full files under the same permissions as the drive.
  • Fyle plans to keep version history long enough to audit agent edits on every paid plan.
  • Fyle plans UK-only workspaces for Enterprise customers.

Which to choose

Choose Dropbox if

  • You mainly need cheap, reliable sync and sharing.
  • Agents only need to read small files.
  • Conflicts are rare in your team and conflicted copies are manageable.

Choose Fyle if

  • Agents edit shared files and you want a person to approve what lands.
  • Agents need to work with files larger than 5 MB.
  • You need long history to audit or roll back agent edits.

Questions

Does Dropbox work with AI agents?

Yes. When we checked in October 2026, Dropbox had a read/write MCP server in open beta. Our research found agent file reads were limited to 5 MB.

Is Fyle cheaper than Dropbox?

No. Dropbox Plus gives 2 TB for $9.99/month, which is less per terabyte than Fyle’s plans. Fyle is for people who need agents and people working safely on the same files, not for the cheapest storage.

Is Fyle available now?

Fyle is in development. Built so far: accounts, organisations with roles, two-factor sign-in, organisation security policies, and device sign-in for the desktop app and CLI. The drive, agent sessions and review are planned and not available yet.
